Laid Off? Let’s Meet Up

UpMo will be sponsoring LaidOffCamp in San Francisco on Tuesday, March 3. The LaidOffCampevent is an ad-hoc gathering of unemployed, underemployed, and non-traditionally employed individuals — freelancers, entrepreneurs, etc. — to network and share ideas on surviving and thriving in a down economy (happily employed individuals will not be turned away).

Some of the potential discussion topics are: living on an extreme budget, building your personal brand, being a freelance consultant, and affordable health care. It’s a great opportunity to tap into a wealth of knowledge capital and connect with professionals seeking career control. UpMo’s Community Manager Aswan Morgan will be in attendance; stop by and say “hi”.

Twenty-four-year-old Chris Hutchins started LaidOffCamp after being laid off in December 08 from Monitor Group, a San Francisco consulting firm. His words: “I found it a positive experience because it gave me the opportunity to find what I’m really passionate about.” Yes! Don’t let the job crunch crush your dreams of autonomy. Now is the time to target what you want to do. Strategize. Re-assess your career. Define goals. Create a plan. Execute.

Here’s a recent CBS news feature on LaidOffCamp:

LaidOffCamp Details:

  • Tuesday: March 3rd @ 9 a.m.

Wow, I knew I wasn’t the only one! I’ve started a group with much the same idea. It’s called Redefining Unemployment! (http://www.redefining-unemployment.net/)I think being unemployed is an amazing time to explore entrepreneurship, and there is an unprecedented number of talented people to collaborate out there who suddenly have a lot of free time.

I’m really excited to have found LaidOffCamp, so thanks!
